History
Built at English Electric’s Vulcan Foundry, near Newton-le-Willows in Lancashire, this locomotive started life as D6843 in May 1963. It went new to Cardiff Canton, before moving north to Scotland in August 1966, where it stayed until returning to South Wales in October 1974, having been renumbered to 37143 under TOPS earlier in the year.
The Class 37 was rebuilt as a subclass ‘37/7’ with additional ballast weight for hauling heavy coal and steel trains in South Wales, and was renumbered 37800 in 1985. Named ‘Cassiopeia’, it is one of 12 owned by Europhoenix, but on loan with Rail Operations Group (ROG) and is still in service.
