Although French locomotives have borne city names since 1870, the SNCF only revived this tradition on June 2, 1973, with the naming of electric locomotive BB 15006 in Metz. Since then, more than 600 locomotives have proudly carried the coats of arms and emblems of French towns and cities – either as aluminium nameplates or adhesive badges – serving as true ambassadors on rails.
Among these is CC 72071, named “Marseille” on March 4, 1975.
Named locomotives have always held a special appeal for railway modellers, inspiring collectors to complete full rosters of “named” engines from specific series or regions.
Arnold’s new CC 72071 pairs beautifully with the recently released TEE “Jules Verne” sets (HN4498 and HN4499).
The Jules Verne service ran in the morning from Nantes to Paris (TEE 30) and returned in the late afternoon as TEE 31, stopping only at Angers. Introduced on September 28, 1980, it was hauled by a CC 72000 even over the electrified section between Le Mans and Paris. Journey times matched those of the Maine Océan, taking 3 hours and 17 minutes each way.
